Alston is located at the hub of routes crossing the northern Pennines, providing easy access from / to The Lake District, Carlisle, Hadrian’s Wall, The Northumberland National Park, County Durham and North Yorkshire. It also sits on the C2C cycle route and the Pennine Way long distance walk.


Our station in the town is located beside the A686 road as you leave the town travelling north towards Hexham and is well signposted from all major routes. Please look for the brown and white tourist signs.

Kirkhaugh Station has no suitable vehicular access, and visitors arriving by car should use the ample car park at Alston Station.


Lintley Halt is situated on the A689 Brampton to Alston road about a mile south of Slaggyford. There is limited parking and access to the platform involves negotiating a rough track on a rising gradient. Passengers with mobility problems or parents with buggies may prefer to use the Alston terminus to commence their journey.


Please be aware that during term time Barhaugh Hall / Robinwood Activity Centre use the area between the A689 and the cattle grid at as a coach turning area. Patrons using Lintley Halt are requested not to park in this area.


By Train


The nearest main line stations with bus links to Alston are at Hexham and Haltwhistle both of which are served by trains on Northern Rail’s Newcastle to Carlilse service. Please note that onward connections by bus are limited and anyone wishing to travel by train are strongly advised to ensure that suitable bus service are available.


By Bus


Alston is served by buses from Carlisle, Brampton, Haltwhistle, Hexham, Keswick and Nenthead. However, services are very limited and visitors are advised to check timetables before travelling.
