SLAGGYFORD STATION PROJECT - PART 11 AND PLANNED WORK ARTICLES PAGE

Slaggyford Station Project - Part 11

I returned to Alston for more work on Slaggyford Station. I can’t believe that this is the 10th year since Chris Shaw got a gang of us to clear all of the vegetation and discovered a building and a platform there. Much work has been carried out over the years and the building is still looking good just waiting for a train to arrive.

I had visited the station just after Easter 2008 to check on the drains, etc. I have located some more drains, so the drainage plan is being constantly updated.

The station building itself just had some minor repairs done to the floors by the doors and a repair to the Ladies Waiting Room door. I walked the trackbed from Slaggyford to Kirkhaugh to look at the site of the Barhaugh incline ropeway remains, just by Lintley, with a view to getting all of this area tidied up and recorded.

Diary of work done between 19th and 23rd May 2008:-

Monday 19th May Tony Charlesworth joined me for a week. The platform was mowed (twice) and the edges were strimmed, we also cleared out the ditch along the front and side of the building. It was decided this year to paint the proper white line along the front of the platform edge, so all of the weeds and moss, etc., were removed and the painting was started in the late afternoon.

Richard Graham and Jim Harper went hunting for drains behind the demolished part of the platform and found none, so they did a spot dig looking for a drain in the front of the platform again none was found. So they went down the trackbed to find where the cross drain which acts as a kind of overflow, went from the timber chamber just past Bridge 33. The gas pipe went straight through this cross drain. The lock was refitted on the former Ladies Toilet door which now has a key by the way.

Tuesday 20th May Finished off painting the white line on the edge of the platform. A tool had been made to scribe a line four inches down from the top of the platform edge. This took all of the morning, so in the afternoon, we started easing all of the opening lights in the windows, including removal and cleaning up of the window ironmongery.

Wednesday 21st May Finished off all of the opening lights, removed the lock off the lobby door in the Ladies Waiting Room to take home and to have a key made and to clean and refurbish the lock. Also swept out the permanent way hut.

Thursday 22nd May Checked and cleaned out all of the drains and chambers between culvert 38 and Bridge 39 in the morning. Started clearing out a brick lined pit at Barhaugh incline ropeway site, but had to stop after disturbing a rabbit burrow. Helped to clear branches, etc., from blown down trees that Richard Graham was clearing to feed the bonfire.

Friday 23rd May Edged along the back of the platform edging stones just to make it look more presentable and gave the building a good sweep out and oiled all of the locks and hinges, etc. Rubbish was removed as well.

So a few more jobs were completed this time. My next working visit hopefully planned for the end of July or beginning of August 2008, to coincide with the railway’s 25th anniversary and the 2008 Gala Weekend will involve the following work. To locate, find and clean out more of the existing drains between Lintley Viaduct and Slaggyford, more work on the station building itself and clearing out the Barhaugh incline ropeway pit.

Footnote: I entered a quiz night at the Turks Head pub on the Tuesday night and joined a local team and we came third they told me that they usually came last in these quizzes.
