Steam Locomotives currently based at Alston:-
No.6 0-4-0 side and well tank Thomas Edmondson.
Built by Henschel of Kassel, Germany in 1918, works no. 16047. Tractive effort 70 h.p.
Formerly worked for Minas y Ferrocarril de Utrillas, Teruel, Spain.
Current condition: Major overhaul was completed in September 2006. In working order and currently used on passenger trains.No.10 0-6-0 tank plus tender Naklo.
Built at the Chrzanow workshops, Poland in 1957, works no. 3459. Tractive effort 70 h.p.
Formerly worked for Naklo Sugar Factory, near Bydgoszcz, Poland.
Current condition: Rebuilt with enlarged cab and without side water tanks. In working order and currently used on passenger trains during steam days.No.14 0-4-0 tank Helen Kathryn.
Built by Henschel of Kassel, Germany in 1948, works no. 28035. Tractive effort 70 h.p.
Formerly worked clearing bomb damage in various Eastern Germany cities and later used on a forestry railway there. Imported to U.K. during 1970 and used on Bala Lake Railway and Llanberis Lake Railway in North Wales. Locomotive now privately owned currently on long term loan to South Tynedale Railway.
Current condition: In working order, after a major overhaul was completed in July 2005. Currently used on passenger trains.No.16 0-4-2 tank Carlisle.
Built by Hunslet Engine Company of Leeds in 1937, works no. 1859. Tractive effort 90 h.p.
Formerly worked for Umtwalumi Valley Estate sugar plantation, Natal, South Africa. Arrived at Alston in January 1998.
Current condition: Dismantled and requires a complete major overhaul.
Steam Locomotive on long term loan, currently based at Alston:-
0-6-2 saddle tank Barber.
Built by Thomas Green and Company Limited of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England in 1908, works No. 441. Tractive effort of 6,000 lbs at 75% boiler pressure.
Formerly worked at Harrogate Gas Works, Harrogate, North Yorkshire and preserved by the Narrow Gauge Railway Society, on loan from Leeds Industrial Museum, Armley Mills, Leeds, West Yorkshire.
For eventual overhaul and restoration to working order, if funds can be obtained towards the costs involved.
Steam Locomotive privately owned, temporarily based at Alston:-
0-4-2 tank Green Dragon, formerly known as Saccharine.
Built by Fowler of Leeds, England in 1914, works No. 13355.
Formerly worked in South Africa and later used on Alford Valley Railway, Alford, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
Current condition: Undergoing an overhaul away from the South Tynedale Railway and not currently on site.

Diesel Locomotives currently based at Alston:-
No.4 0-6-0 diesel mechanical Naworth.
Built by Hudswell-Clarke of Leeds in 1952, works no. DM819. Tractive effort 100 h.p. with Gardner 6LW engine and 3 speed gearbox.
Formerly worked for National Coal Board, North East Area at Horden Colliery, County Durham.
Current condition: In working order and currently used on passenger trains.No.9 0-4-0 diesel mechanical.
Built by Hunslet Engine Company of Leeds in 1952, works no. 4109. Tractive effort 70 h.p. with Gardner 4LW engine and 4 speed gearbox.
Rebuilt by South Tynedale Railway in 1992.
Formerly worked for National Coal Board, North East Area at Seaham Area Training Centre, County Durham.
Current condition: In working order, used on freight trains and occasionally on passenger trains.No.11 0-4-0 diesel mechanical Cumbria.
Built by Hunslet Engine Company of Leeds in 1967, works no. 6646. Tractive effort 60 h.p. with Gardner 4LW engine and single speed gearbox.
Formerly worked at Broughton Moor NATO Depot, Maryport, Cumbria.
Current condition: In working order, used on freight trains and on locomotive shed yard shunting duties.DM1169 0-6-0 diesel mechanical.
Built by Hudswell-Clarke of Leeds in 1960, works no. DM1169. Original dimensions and technical details identical to No. 4 Naworth.
Supplied new to Dawdon Colliery, County Durham, it was transferred to Blackhall Colliery, County Durham in May 1977. In January 1980 it was moved to Ashington Central Workshops, where it was used to supply parts to keep other members of the class operating. It was purchased by Durham Narrow Gauge Group from British Coal in 1993. It was purchased by the South Tynedale Railway Preservation Society in 2004.
Current condition: Only the chasis, wheels, rods and gearbox exist, as it was acquired primarily as a source of spares.DM1247 0-6-0 diesel mechanical Old Rusty.
Built by Hudswell-Clarke of Leeds in 1961, works no. DM1247. Original dimensions and technical details identical to No. 4 Naworth.
This locomotive last worked for the National Coal Board at Vane Tempest colliery, near Seaham, County Durham, where it was used for training drivers. When the colliery closed, it was bought by Arthur Belshaw and taken to the South Tynedale Railway.
The locomotive being surplus to requirements was purchased by a member of the Welsh Highland Railway at Porthmadog, Gwynedd, in North Wales and it arrived there in June 1996 where the controls and bodywork has been completely rebuilt., It arrived back at Alston on Sunday 25th March 2007 where it is currently based while on loan to the South Tynedale Railway.
Current condition: In working order. It is planned to use this locomotive to haul passenger and freight trains on the South Tynedale Railway, when all of the overhaul and modification work to this locomotive has been completed.4110. 0-4-0 diesel mechanical.
Built by Hunslet Engine Company of Leeds in 1952, works no. 4110. Original dimensions and technical details identical to No.9.
Supplied new to Chilton Colliery, County Durham (Plant No. 2304/51), it was transferred to Dean and Chapter Colliery, County Durham in 1964, and then to Horden Colliery in 1967. Converted from underground to surface use at Ashington Central Workshops in 1976, prior to working at Herrington Colliery from 1977. It was again rebuilt at Ashington Central Workshops in 1982 and then transferred to Murton Colliery, where it worked until withdrawn in 1989. It was purchased by the Durham Narrow Gauge Group in 1990 to provide spares for No. 9.
Battery Electric Locomotives:-
No.17 (NG25) 4 wheel battery electric.
Built by Baguley-Drewry Ltd of Burton-on-Trent in 1973, works no. 3704. Rebuilt by Andrew Barclay Sons & Co. Ltd, Kilmarnock in 1987, works no. 6526.
This is one of three battery electric locomotives, NG23 to NG25 that were used on the narrow gauge railway network at R.A.F. Chilmark, until closure in 1995. This locomotive was later preserved and used on the North Gloucestershire Narrow Gauge Railway, Toddington, Gloucestershire, before arriving at Alston. Fitted with new batteries in 2004.
Current condition: In working order, used on locomotive shed yard shunting duties.No. 2519/3500 English Electric/Baguley 4 wheel battery electric, Type EM1A2.
Built by English Electric Co. Ltd, Dick Kerr Works, Preston, Lancashire, in 1958 as works no 2519, and by E. E. Baguley of Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, works no. 3500.
Formerly worked by National Coal Board, North East Area as fleet no. 2519 and 2103/35. Supplied new to Heworth Colliery, County Durham, it was transferred to Washington F Pit in September 1963. It was later sent to the Morrison Busty Training Centre in July 1968, and then to the Driver Training Centre at Seaham Colliery in October 1974. It was out of use by 1984 and was purchased by the Durham Narrow Gauge Group from British Coal in 1993. The locomotive is complete apart from batteries. The chassis has been donated to the South Tynedale Railway Preservation Society for use as a travelling crane, which is currently under construction.
Current condition: Out of use, partly dismantled. Chassis being used for mounting of a crane, for eventual use on works trains.
Permanent Way Trolley:-
No.DB965082 - 4 wheel diesel permanent way trolley.
Built by D. Wickham and Company Ltd., Ware, Hertfordshire in 1957, works no. 7597.
Formerly used by British Rail, converted from standard gauge to 2 ft. narrow gauge.
Current condition: In working order. Used on light freight trains.

Passenger Vehicles:-
No.1 Wooden bodied, 32 seat, 4 compartment coach.
Built at Alston with Manpower Services Commission assistance, on the converted chassis of ex-R.A.F. Fauld, Hudson bogie wagon, batch no. 98590 of 1955. Air brakes fitted to one bogie.
Entered service in 1983, with half doors and wooden seats.
Current condition: Out of use, chassis and wooden floor in good condition, original wooden body in poor condition, awaiting new bodywork.No.2 Wooden bodied, 28 seat or 21 seat with space for three wheelchairs, 4 compartment coach.
Built at Alston with Manpower Services Commission assistance, on the converted chassis of ex-R.A.F. Fauld, Hudson bogie wagon, batch no. 90698 of 1952. Air brakes fitted to one bogie.
Entered service in 1983, with half doors and with 32 wooden seats. Rebuilt 1992 to make vehicle suitable for conveyance of passengers in wheelchairs and seating reduced to present 21 seats or with tip-up seats used 28 seats.
Current condition: Currently out of service until May 2007, whilst maintenance work to its bogies is being carried out.No.3 Wooden bodied, 32 seat gangway saloon coach.
Built at Alston entirely by volunteers on the extended, converted chassis of ex R.A.F. Fauld Hudson bogie wagon, batch no. 97004 of 1955; formerly works vehicle no. 23. Air brakes fitted to one bogie. Entered service in 1987.
Current condition: Used on passenger trains, now fitted with new seats and small tables.No.5 Steel bodied, 40 seat open end vestibule and centre gangway saloon coach.
The steel body was fabricated by Falmech of Alston to South Tynedale Railway Preservation Society design, mounted on new, diamond-framed bogies, built by Hudson of Aston-in-Makersfield, to a modified standard design. All of the running gear, air braking on all wheels, internal lining, end and side door fabrication, fitting out and painting carried out at Alston by volunteers.
Entered service in 1991. Bogie numbers 001 and 002.
Current condition: In use on passenger trains.No.6 Steel bodied, 40 seat open end vestibule and centre gangway saloon coach.
Identical to No. 5 above. Bogie numbers 003 and 004.
Current condition: In use on passenger trains.No.7 Steel bodied, 40 seat open end vestibule and centre gangway saloon coach.
Identical to No. 5 above. Bogie numbers 005 and 006.
Current condition: In use on passenger trains.
Guards Vans or Brake Vans:-
No.19 - 4 wheel brake van.
Chassis built using chassis of a four wheel wagon from R.A.F. Broughton Moor, which was regauged from 2 ft. 6 inch to 2 ft. Body built at Alston by volunteers.
Current condition: In use on passenger trains.No.20 - 4 wheel brake van.
Brake van with wooden body, built at Alston, on the chassis of a 1935 Simplex diesel locomotive, works no. 5880.
