Entered service in 1983, with half doors and with 32 wooden seats. Rebuilt 1992 to make vehicle suitable for conveyance of passengers in wheelchairs and seating reduced to present 21 seats or with tip-up seats used 28 seats.

Coach No.1 was a Wooden bodied, 32 seat, 4 compartment coach identical to No.2 as originally built. It was withdrawn from service and broken up following the arrival of coaches 5 - 7.
No.3 Wooden bodied, 18 seat buffet coach.

Built at Alston entirely by volunteers on the extended, converted chassis of ex R.A.F. Fauld Hudson bogie wagon, batch no. 97004 of 1955; formerly works vehicle no. 23. Air brakes fitted to one bogie. Entered service in 1987 as a 32 seat bogie saloon coach but rebuilt with a small kitchen and service area. N.B. Our stock does not have corridor connections, so the buffet service is only available to those travelling in the coach or to other passengers when the train is stopped at the termini.
No.5 - 7, Steel bodied, 40 seat open end vestibule and centre gangway saloon coach.

Identical steel bodied coaches entering service from 1991.

The steel bodies were fabricated by Falmech of Alston to South Tynedale Railway Preservation Society design, mounted on new, diamond-framed bogies, built by Hudson of Aston-in-Makersfield, to a modified standard design. All of the running gear, air braking on all wheels, internal lining, end and side door fabrication, fitting out and painting carried out at Alston by volunteers.

It is hoped to begin a refurbishment of these coaches shortly, fitting new 2 + 1 seating and heating.

Ex-Sierra Leone coach fully refurbished and fitted out as a buffet coach following its acquisition from the Welshpool & Llanfair Railway.

Hopefully entering service during the 2011 season.
