And Finally Something Different
Epipactis dunensis var tynensis
by Alan Gendle
Inland Type of Dune helleborine
The inland variety of the Dune helleborine (Epipactis dunensis var tynensis) only grows at eight sites in England, including Alston station. It is a plant that is unique and grows nowhere else in the world. It is a specialist plant that only grows where the ground has been polluted with heavy metals, i.e. lead.
The majority of the sites are by the River Tyne on ground that has been polluted by lead waste being washed down the river from the North Pennine lead mining activities of the last few centuries. Semi shade under Birch Trees are it’s favoured habitat.
