Tynedalesman
The Magazine of the South Tynedale Railway Preservation Society.
An Introduction to the Tynedalesman Magazine
The Tynedalesman was originally a regularly published newsletter, which has been revamped several years ago as a magazine, it is produced by the South Tynedale Railway Preservation Society (abbreviated to S.T.R.P.S.) for its members and surplus copies of the paper version of the magazine are made available for sale to the general public at Alston Station shop.
Paper copies of the magazine are distributed to each of the paid-up members of the S.T.R.P.S. and they keep members informed of recent developments and on items of interest relating to the South Tynedale Railway (abbreviated to S.T.R.) at Alston, in Cumbria.
The magazine is published quarterly, i.e. four times per year, and publication is planned to take place during each of the four seasons of the year - with issues dated as either Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter, for each year.
The contents of the magazine varies as follows, although in the list shown below, not all of the items appear in each issue, as this depends on the number and types of articles, which are submitted to the compliers prior to the publication of each issue:-
- Articles or photographs regarding recent news and developments which have took place on the South Tynedale Railway or historical information about the Haltwhistle to Alston branch line in standard gauge days (from 1840 to 1976) or narrow gauge days (post 1976 to present day).
- Announcements of future events taking place on the South Tynedale Railway.
- Letters to the Editor - Letters from S.T.R.P.S. members about the South Tynedale Railway or Haltwhistle to Alston branch line, or about other railways.
- Members Jottings - A report by the S.T.R.P.S. members about recent and forthcoming developments, or about their views on the South Tynedale Railway.
- Locomotive News (52C Alston) - Information from the S.T.R. chief engineer, Alan Blackburn, about the current condition of the S.T.R. steam, diesel and battery-electric locomotive fleet and details of any overhauls, repairs and rebuilds which have been carried out recently.
- Membership News - A list of people who have recently joined the S.T.R.P.S. since the previous issue of Tynedalesman and members who have left the Society or recently deceased.
- Annual General Meeting news and reports - Forthcoming notification of the Annual General Meeting of the S.T.R.P.S., is usually published prior to each meeting taking place, which are usually held in Alston during November. A report of items raised and discussed at each Annual General Meeting, is usually published in the issue following it.
- Midlands Area Report - A report of model railway exhibitions attended by the Midlands Area Group, which is a separate support group of the South Tynedale Railway is published periodically. The Group provides a sales stall selling a range of model railway items, die-cast toys, railway books and videos and Thomas items. All profits made go towards the purchase of tools and equipment for the South Tynedale Railway at Alston.
- Humorous and light-hearted fun articles written by S.T.R.P.S. members - for example, the Old Smokey tales.
The contents, including articles and photographs from the current issue of the Tynedalesman magazine are published on these internet pages of the South Tynedale Railway.
The current compilers of the Tynedalesman magazine are Mike and Clare Le Marie and any correspondence or photographs for publication should be sent to them via the following e-mail link. Send an e-mail to Tynedalesman compilers
New design of the Tynedalesman Magazine Internet Pages
From mid June 2007, the Tynedalesman magazine content pages, have been redesigned. A list of the headings of the contents of the current issue is shown, near the top on the left hand side navigation window of this page, and this is where access is available to all of the pages that contain articles and photographs from the magazine on this internet site.
The headings of the content of articles that may still be of interest to readers, published from previous issues of Tynedalesman magazine, are shown below those of the current issue in the left hand side navigation window of, either this page and all of the other pages, that contain articles and photographs from the magazine on this internet site.
The headings shown in the left hand side navigation window will vary as each issue of the magazine is published on the internet site but the content of the current issue of the magazine will follow as closely as possible, the order of the content of the paper copies of the magazine.
It is hoped that the above mentioned new arrangements, will make it easier for readers, to read and follow the content of the current issue of the Tynedalesman magazine and the pages of interest from previous issues on this internet site, than the old system of using specific titles for each internet page of Tynedalesman magazine, that was used up until early June 2007.
