Locomotive and Passenger Rolling Stock
All of the vehicles which are currently based at the South Tynedale Railway are described on these stocklist internet pages.
The locomotives and rolling stock used on the South Tynedale Railway have been obtained from a wide variety of sources, both in the United Kingdom and abroad. Much of the equipment is second-hand, and many of the items have been rebuilt, or have undergone considerable modification, before being used on the railway. Some of the vehicles have been built new for the Society, partially in the railways own workshops at Alston.
All of the passenger vehicles are fitted with automatic Willison buckeye centre couplings, without side buffers. Locomotives used on passenger trains, and all of the passenger coaches are fitted with the single line, automatic, air braking system, as required by the Department of Transport.
The gauge is 2 feet or 610 mm, and the maximum line speed is 15 miles per hour or 24 kilometres per hour.
There are three categories of ownership for vehicles used on the railway, these are as follows:-
- The first includes all vehicles that are owned by the South Tynedale Railway Preservation Society.
- The second includes those vehicles that are owned by a consortium of South Tynedale Railway Preservation Society members, known as the Durham Narrow Gauge Group (DNGG).
Please note that the vehicles in the two groups above, are numbered in the same series and until 1991, they were allocated numbers as they arrived on the railway. Running numbers are no longer allocated to new arrivals until the vehicle is ready to enter service.
- The final group comprises those vehicles which are privately owned and are either on permanent or long-term, loan to the railway.
The locomotives under the above group retain their own names and liveries, but are allocated numbers in the same series as those in the first two categories and may, with the consent of the owners, carry this number.
Finally, regarding liveries carried by locomotives and rolling stock on the railway:-
- The locomotives are painted in several different liveries as described individually.
- The coaches and passenger brake van are painted maroon, with an orange band lined out in cream below waist level, on which the railways name is written in cream letters with black shading.
- Works vehicles are generally painted grey.
- In all cases the chassis and running gear are painted black.
