Locomotive No.4 Naworth |
Locomotive Details:-
This diesel mechanical locomotive was constructed in 1952 by Hudswell-Clarke & Co. of Leeds, works no. DM819, as a flameproof, underground mine locomotive for the National Coal Board. These locomotives were distributed by Huwood & Co., of Gateshead, hence the trade name Huwood-Hudswell. It was delivered new to Horden Colliery, County Durham as their No. 2 (Plant 2304/7), where it remained in service underground until withdrawn in February 1979, when it was sent to Ashington Colliery Workshops, Northumberland. It was bought by the Durham Narrow Gauge Group in 1981 and transported to Alston.
This locomotive is fitted with a 100 horse power, 6-cylinder Gardner 6LW diesel engine, with a fluid coupling driving a Bostock and Bramley synchro self shifting air change, 3 speed gear box. The final drive is by jackshaft and coupling rods, giving maximum speeds of 3.8, 7.3 and 14 mph, and a maximum tractive effort of 8410 lbs (3815 kg).
The major conversion of this locomotive included the removal of those parts necessary for underground use, a full mechanical overhaul, fabrication of a new cab and bodywork, alteration of the air-braking system, and fitting of an electric starter motor.
It entered service during the 1988 operating season and is now the mainstay of the diesel fleet.
During the winter of 1994/95 it was fitted with a completely renovated Gardner 6LW diesel engine, a larger air compressor for the braking system and received a total mechanical overhaul and repaint.
In early 2005 the bodywork of the locomotive was repainted again, this time into its current green livery with yellow stripe.
