Trains operating between Alston and Kirkhaugh.

The South Tynedale Railway operates narrow gauge passenger trains along a 2 mile line along the scenic South Tyne valley between Alston, in Cumbria and Kirkhaugh, in Northumberland. Train services operate on certain dates between Easter and early November 2003 and Santa Special trains on certain dates in December. See the timetable page for more details.
The railway operates along part of the old standard gauge trackbed of the Haltwhistle to Alston branch line, which was closed to passengers on 1st May 1976. It is hoped to extend the line by another 2 miles from Kirkhaugh to Slaggyford, an appeal for funds has recently been launched to raise 400,000 by the year 2006, for cover the costs of track materials, viaduct work and the renovation of Slaggyford Station building and platform, where there is road access for the future potential passengers from Slaggyford village. Please contact the railway for a Slaggyford Appeal brochure, all donations are welcome and will be gratefully received.
A wide range of information about this narrow gauge railway is now available on several pages, which can be accessed by clicking on the bold green text in the left hand side column of this page, most of which have been compiled and are regularly updated by Daniel McIntyre, who is currently the webmaster (the internet pages compiler) for the South Tynedale Railway Preservation Society. These pages have been designed to assist anyone who is planning a visit to the railway and also for people who wish to know more information about the locomotives and rolling stock used, or about the history and operation of the railway.
Passenger trains no longer stop at Gilderdale station which was closed from Saturday 4th September 1999 when operation of the Gilderdale to Kirkhaugh stretch of line commenced.
