Slaggyford Extension Appeal The railway needs 400,000 to extend the line from Kirkhaugh to Slaggyford by 2006...
can you please help to raise funds by sending your donation today.
The South Tynedale Railway is about to embark on its most ambitious programme yet, the extension of the railway from Kirkhaugh to Slaggyford.
The railway initially began operating on 30th July 1983 on a short section of track to the north of Alston Station but by December 1986 had extended its operations to the Northumberland border at Gilderdale, a distance of 1 miles from Alston. At the same time planning permission was granted for a further 3 mile extension from Gilderdale across the county border to Slaggyford.
Work on this section was started and after substantial work on the viaduct crossing the Lort Burn, a further mile of track to the hamlet of Kirkhaugh was opened on 4th September 1999.
The challenge now ahead is to finish the section for which permission has been obtained, by completing the 2 miles to Slaggyford within the next four years. The great advantage to be gained by reaching Slaggyford is that the line will then have access by road at both Alston and Slaggyford. Kirkhaugh will then become the mid-point of the line and with its already existing run-round loop, will enable the railway to run two trains, one from each terminus, passing at Kirkhaugh.
However, to achieve this, the railway requires your help with the costs involved. Please give as generously and as often as you can, by donations or by sponsorship of sleepers or sections of track.
The railway also welcome volunteers.
Donation amounts
Donations to the appeal fund can made by a single donation of either 10, 20, 50, 100 or other suitable amounts. Regular payments can also be made by completing a Standing Order form. You may also sponsor a railway sleeper or sleepers at 25 each or sponsor a section of track at 400. Cheques and payable orders should be made payable to STRPS 150 Extension Appeal.
Tax Benefits from Your Gifts Under new rule, from 6th April 2000, any gift can qualify for a tax repayment of 28p in every 1 given to the company, if you are a UK taxpayer. There is no need to sign a deed of covenant for regular payments and the 250 minimum for one-off payments is abolished. All you need to do is to complete a Declaration Form. You should only do this if you are sure that you will pay enough tax in the year to cover the repayment. Higher rate taxpayers can continue to claim higher rate relief on their tax returns.
For example:-
- A donation of 10, will give a tax refund of 2.80 giving a total value of 12.80 to the appeal fund.
- A donation of 20, will give a tax refund of 5.60 giving a total value of 25.60 to the appeal fund.
