England
- Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line
The Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line were formed in 1981 to campaign against a proposal to close this famous historic and scenic route, and in 1989 the Government decided that the line must remain open.
Since then the Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line has acted as a user group to improve facilities and services on the line for passengers. Eight stations have been reopened, the number of trains using the line has increased, station buildings have been refurbished, platforms raised and Victorian style lamps installed. It has restored disused signal boxes at Armathwaite and Settle stations. It operates a Station Adoption Scheme whereby some of the members tend the flower beds of stations. It also helps to produce and distribute promotional leaflets to boost passenger numbers, and it organises guided walks from some trains. It also works in partnership with other organisations on many projects. It requires members help to promote and develop the Settle-Carlisle line as part of a national railway network.
Much has already been achieved but much remains to be done. The Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line would like to see all of the stations on the line fully restored; Anglo-Scottish trains running again; regular services on the line from Lancashire; and better marketing initiatives.
Subscriptions help the Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line to continue the work to enhance the line and encourages its members to become actively involved - by staffing the souvenir shops at Settle and Appleby stations, in restoration projects, with station gardening or leaflet distribution - in one of the local groups.
