South Tynedale Railway launches “Barber” appeal


The South Tynedale Railway has launched an appeal to raise the £100,000 needed to return this iconic 1908 built Green’s of York locomotive back to working order.

January 2012 edition of the Tynedalesman now available online.


The railway is now closed for its period of winter maintenance and to allow staff to complete the final drive to complete the extension to Lintley in time for the April opening event.


As for other projects, as is often the case, the unforeseen often gets in the way of the original plans, and we hope that you will bear with us while we do negotiate a few issues:-

From 1st April 2012 the railway will commence running to its new, but temporary, northern terminus at Lintley. With a slightly earlier start we can continue to run four round trips in the day without making it too onerous for our crews or less convenient for passengers. First Train on Lintley Viaduct for 35 years


Finally, it is hoped that funding will again be made available to operate the “Roof of England” bus service introduced during last year to link Alston with Stanhope in Weardale. It is hoped that the service will be able to run on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays from the end of march until late October. As a bonus for users, the feasibility of bus users being offered discounts to some tourist attractions (including the South Tynedale Railway) is also being explored. South Tynedale Railway Special Events in 2012



Sunday April 1st  


The first day of trains on the new line to Lintley.  Come and help us celebrate the opening with a special fare of just £2 return.



Saturday and Sunday May 12th and 13th


Join members of the Narrow Gauge Railway Society in Alston for their Annual Meeting. There will be extra trains and visiting locomotives.



Saturday June 2nd


It’s Diamond Jubilee weekend so children wear your best sparkly tiara or pretty decorated hat and we’ll reward you with a special half fare; just £1.50 return.



Saturday June 16th


It’s Teddy Day and you’ll bearly pay anything!  Every accompanied child bringing their favourite bear pays just a £1 return fare and the bear goes free, of course.



Monday August 20th


The Steam Car Club of Great Britain will visit today with more than 20 historic steam cars here for the afternoon.  



Saturday September 8th


Grumpy Grandad Day.   Bring your grandad, grumpy or not, and he’ll pay just £3 return fare.  That should put a smile on his face!
